THODERICH
Around 520 A.C. King Theoderic decided to build this peculiar and unique tomb monument.
It is said that the construction material (Istrian stone) was brought from the other side of the Adriatic sea on enormous barges as the transport means by land were at that time insufficient to take such a heavy load. It’s enough to mention that the monolith dominating the monument as a sort of cupule has a weight of three hundred tons. There are many stories and legends about this cupule, about the difficulties in placing it and about the deep crack in it (crossing the stone from the center and almost reaching the circumference), caused maybe by a thunderbolt. The big covering stone was chosen by Theoderic to protect himself from the thunderbolt that a wicked prediction said he would be killed by. How could this enormous monolith be placed upon the structure below without making it collapse? Anyhow, the gloomy tomb is still there, defying the ravages of time since almost 1500 years. This story explains why we have chosen the image of the mausoleum, hoping in such a long life for our Adriatic Golf Club Cervia.
